Walks to remember: Memories of the forgotten roads

Someone has wisely said that journey is beautiful than destination. It is the experience of journey that gives meaning to movement. When we reach our destination or goal, the experience makes us mature, bold and wise. Life too is a beautiful journey where we take a walk to many roads and lanes. The road to school leads us to our bright future while the path to a food stall and cinema halls makes us celebrate the joy of life. The walk to school in morning is still fresh in my mind.

Scene from the book : ‘The room on the roof’ – The introductory scene of Rusty walking the road

Accompanied by my close buddy, the road to school passed on without exhaustion. There was so much to discuss while walking : planning for college, preparing for exams, dreams of proposing the beautiful girl in class, discussing about puberty etc.  The road to office is very exhaustive compared to the roads that led me to my favorite places – bookstalls, cinema halls and home of my sweetheart.
I may have stopped going to the old roads of boyhood, but the roads are still waiting for me.

The memories of old roads of India brought back writer Ruskin Bond back to India. Even Tagore’s yearning for home roads brought him back to India from London. He returned back without completing his law studies. Rest was history. He did what his heart wanted: writing. Each road had a story to tell. I passed on to some roads that led to failure and disappointments. Some were heart-breaking too. Despite the setbacks, each road gave a new direction to my dreams.

Sometimes walking aimlessly also lead us to something new that we never dared to explore. The unfamiliar roads bonded us with something. My walks to interviews in companies made me familiar with many new places I never thought of. Every road had a story to tell. The stories are of pedestrians who walk occasionally, alternately and regularly. Sometimes a walk with loved one is memorable than driving a Chevrolet. The happy memories of walks with my loved ones is what keep me moving. Some walks are really worth remembering.
